Chapter 9: He is the Gift

The reason for my title is because we have been asked as missionaries to share the video from the church titled 'He is the Gift'. As we go into the Christmas Season, it is easy to be consumed with lists and all sorts of things we 'need' to do and gifts to buy that we miss the reason we celebrate at all: the birth of Jesus Christ. So I would hope, as I share it in my email, you all remember the true reason we have this special time of year.

I love the opportunity we have to work during the Christmas season. Many people keep asking if we´re going home to be with our families for Christmas. We always say no, and say that the mission is for 2 years without visiting our family once. It also got me to thinking. The Christmas season is the best time to teach people of Christ, the real reason behind the holiday, why would we go home. I love my family, but the work is better during this season. I´d prefer to have more Christmases out in the mission field (Sorry Mom) so that I can help other Families. It is really cool because they have something called a "Portal" which is like a nativity set with a large case or a bunch of lights around it. It reminds me of a time portal to the birth of Jesus. :D There was a small miracle that happened this week that has to do with the real reason for Christmas. We were able to see a family setting up one of these portales and it was huge, so I asked them if they wanted help. They said no, but we were able to start talking to them and then shared a small message about how Jesus is the Gift and the proof of God´s love for us. This family, who is normally very catholic actually invited us back to teach more. :) It´s one of the many blessings that come through the Spirit of Christmas. :)

1 funny- We actually had a miracle this last week with a girl that has been prepared for us. She was Catholic a while back, and still believes in God, but she knows that the Catholic church is false and that the bible has been manipulated by man. When my companion said "what would you say if I said there was more scripture?" she said "I´d believe you" and it freaked him out because NO ONE says that here. :P He was at a loss for words and I was able to cover for him. It was really funny because he has never been at a loss for words before and after the lesson he just kept talking about how awesome it was that she would believe us and how he was just so dumbstruck. We gave her a Book of Mormon and she said she´d read and pray about it. It was awesome.

1 foody- I ate Pumpkin Pie! It was made as a dessert at 2 different Thanksgiving events that happened this last week. :D (this is also my "this reminds me of" Thanksgiving in the states)

If you can't already tell - the missionaries went to the Children's Museum in San Jose. They had a blast being little kids again and just plain having fun. So enjoy a little childishness from these kids who grew up really fast in a foreign country just being goofy and silly. 

Chapter 8: Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving - no double meaning this time - just that with the American holiday coming up, there are many things I am grateful for. One is my companion, Elder Hoover. We are having a great time and really get along and work so hard to bring the work to the people in Costa Rica. Another is the Prophet, Thomas S. Monson and all does to lead the church in these latter days and be the mouthpiece of the Lord. Another is my mission president, President Wilkinson and his family for sacrificing their lives for three years to come down here and guide the best mission ever. He is like a second dad to me and I love him dearly for his guidance. Yet another thing I am grateful for is my family - my mom and dad for supporting me, writing me, praying for me, raising me to be the man I am today, etc., my sisters for always writing me every week, telling me the things I am missing out on, loving me even when I tease them, etc., my grandparents - grams and gramps and nona and papa - for supporting me on my mission, writing me, living and loving the gospel so my parents would love the gospel, spending time with me in my youth, etc., my extended family - aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. for hanging out with me, emailing me, sending me letters and packages, teasing me, teaching me to laugh, and so much more. I am grateful for my friends for always being examples to me, for hanging with me in high school and college, long chats, video gaming, etc. And last but not least, I am thankful for my Savior Jesus Christ and His sacrifice and atonement so that I can return to my family for all eternity.

1 spiritual-prayer for Jorge. We did a huge prayer of faith this last week and a miracle happened! We were praying for an investgator to get a change in work. He works every Sunday but after 2 days of praying every prayer he got off every other sunday and should be getting baptised this week. :) I`m super happy for him and we will be rocking it in white when, as my companion says "he get`s wet."

1 oh crap-today I have 3 projects left to do! 2 from people in SLC and one that I have to get done today, but it`s a monthly thing that they moved up for the Thanksgiving holiday. I am freaking out, but I can do this. :)

1 funny- This week I accidentally dropped a coin in from of homeless people and they all started making jokes. It was funny and sad (this is also the 3rd world story)

1 reminds me of-I got lost today in the car trying to give directions, but then the road turned into a one way road. It reminds me of the first time I was in the car with Elder Hoover, it was crazy because we were learning to drive in Costa Rica. Also, it reminds me of one of the times I had to give you the driections to one of my friends house, but we got lost... That was funny. There also happened a time when I was in college and I was goin home in the Car of a really good friend, but we got lost and I didn`t know what to do or where to go... That was also fun because it was a great friend and now we have a fun memory

1 foody-I have had too much pizza for one week. We didn`t even buy it very much, but many people offered us the pizza and I didn`t want to say no.

1 thing I am thankful for- LEADERS I love my leaders and they help me so much. I have learned so much from them on both a mission level and a World wide (General Authorities) level :)

I am excited for this week. Thursday, Thanksgiving, after we get done with the daily work, we get to go to the Mission President's house and have a real Thanksgiving. My only one, probably, while on my mission. I can't wait!

Chapter 7: Ol' Yeller

So, in this past week I´ve been talking in my sleep, or as Elder Hoover likes to say, screaming in my sleep. Apparently I´ve woken him up 5 times by screaming things. The topic of these screams have been complete Spanish sentences, the number 15, and reading the dream of my companion and telling him what just happened. I don´t remember any of this, but I trust my companion so it must be real. The reason for these dream screams could be a number of things, but I don´t know any of them. If anyone has an idea of what I can do to help my companion get a full night sleep I´d love to hear it. :P

So, also in the last few weeks, Elder Hoover and I have been trying to be healthier in what we eat. I love the idea of being better at this, but my tongue and the part of my mind that is based off of instant gratification have been crying out for the old junk food that I used to eat, chips, fruit drinks, a cream filled cake treat called Pengüinos, ice cream, etc.

1 spiritual moment this week- I am learning the true power of a Fast. When normally I would be really done in the dumps I decided to make the sacrifice and start a fast yesterday. It has really helped me understand that I´m not perfect, but every trial and responsibility I have is to teach me to become so. I am so glad that we don´t have to sacrifice animals (I have been reading the Old Testament and I´ve made it up unto Kings) anymore and that fasting can even be more powerful. :)

1 funny moment this week- This week the only funny thing I have to share is that as we were on our way to the airport Elder Hoover and I quoted Psych for the full hour that we were trying to get there (We left early so that we could get there on time, but the traffic was much worse than we expected).

1 foody thing this week- I had a Mango drink! IT WAS AMAZING! I can´t wait to go back and try it again. :)

1 this reminded me of moment this week- So President really reminds me of my dad. They really like obedience and don´t like excuses. I look up to President as my dad and I know that he does everything he does out of love. I love them both and they both have so much to teach me. :)

1 third world story this week- Our investigator R is really poor. So poor that even though he´s prayed about the Book of Mormon and believes it´s true he goes to another church because they said that if he is a member that they would feed him every day. It´s really sad to see people in conditions like that, but that is his choice. I´m really sad about it. :(

Chapter 6: Stress

This week has been stressful, but a good week. It started out hard, but got a whole ton better. My Monday was a huge bowl of stress and the stress moved into Tuesday and I was in a huge bowl if discouragement. But I know that my friends and family are praying for me and helping me and that helped a lot to get over the beginning of the week and move on.

Spiritual de-stress - The help that a good long prayer can give is very helpful. It was a mix of that and all the prayers that came from you all in Gringolandia that gave me the boost this week that I needed.

Oh crap stress - One of our great investigators is getting visited by another church, but they want to give him physical food to convert him and all we give is spiritual nourishment. It´ll be a hard battle, but I think the true gospel will overcome the false doctrine of Satan.

Funny thing (bust a gut stress) - I am laughing really hard with Elder Hoover, we have a ton of inside jokes among which are the tea shop, Elder Pratt quotes, and a few others. They really make a guy laugh and I´ll remember them for life. :)

Food stress - I ate a giant bag of Takis fuego. They are my new favorite chip. They are chips in the shape of tubes and they are super spicy, but the best thing. :)

Christmas stress - we already have trees up in the office (not my idea, dad).

I really am doing well and I hope to hear from all of you soon. Also remember Proverbs 25:25 ;) (As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.)

Chapter 5: Plata

This week was Halloween and we got dressed up. :)  This is a picture of our costumes for Halloween, note the ties- Silver is Spanish is Plata, which in Costa Rica just means money, signifying the financial secretary. Gold is oro, and it stands for the gold medal that the Migration secretary has in Costa Rica for being one of 2 countries 100% legals. Costa Rica has been there longer though, so we still have the record. ;)So about halloween, we don't really celebrate it much down here :P A few years ago there were some children kidnapped and then sacrificed in the forest. That put a huge damper on the Halloween spirit and they only do personal gatherings here. We did pass by a few bars that had decorations up but we avoided them for the most part because we know the problems the world has with Modesty. We did not have to stay inside the house.

Spiritual moment this week: We have two investigators that I feel can get baptized this month and I´m hoping that one that has been an eternal investigator can join those two. The two that I´m talking about haven´t been to church but it wasn´t all their faults, one didn´t go because the member we sent never showed up at his house. He called us after the first meeting and said that no one showed up to get him but that he had been waiting, ready for an hour. :( I was so sad about that and frustrated that he could be one step closer but a member messed it up. :( The other one is progressing really fast and should be coming this week too.

Oh crap moment this week: So we heard gunshots last week. The gunshots were heard in the most dangerous part of our area and I just happened to be in the area for the first time that day. I was in no danger but it was a good story to tell. No more gun shots but I do like the countryside more than the city, but it´s not all that different, just the people make the difference. I feel safer in the campo of Guanacaste (Limon is dangerous).

Funny thing this week: I played a mean joke on one of the sister training leaders with the fake cockroaches, it made her and her companion scream and it made everyone laugh. She pretended to Trick or treat at our secretary door because she saw I had candy so I gave her the cockroach secretly and then she freaked out when she saw it. I gave it to her as a gift and then I gave her candy. She was a good sport. :)

I was able to laugh a whole bunch w¿this week and I will laugh so much more with Elder H. :)

Solo in the office is fine, I survived the worst week. :) Not all that lonely, 4 was really a crowd, a fun crowd but a crowd none the less. There were two early morning trips that I made this week and both of them have gone by very well. We have a third this upcoming week and I am not excited. Elder Hoover and I made a deal, he drives there and I drive back. He gets more tired on the way back, but once I´m awake I´m awake until I hit the end of the line.

I am fantasterrific! I´m excited to be able to get out into the field more this week and get this area going. I´m getting along really well Elder Hoover and he´s a bunch of fun. We have personalities that fit well and even when tired we haven´t had a fight. :) My English is getting back to normal but my Spanish is falling a bit :( I´m going to fix that with study this week. :)
